Getting Started

Questions about reaching out for the first time.

How do I know if I need therapy? +

If you're asking, that's usually reason enough to have a conversation. You don't have to be in crisis. A lot of the people I work with came in when they were still functioning — holding down a job, maintaining relationships — but knew something was wrong. Others came in after everything had already fallen apart. Both are fine starting points.

What happens during a free consultation? +

This typically is twenty minutes on the phone. You tell me a bit about what's going on, I explain how I work, and we see if it makes sense to meet. If it doesn't feel right, you don't have to continue. I'd rather you find the right person than talk you into working with me.

I'm nervous about reaching out. Is that normal? +

Yes. Most people feel some version of that — embarrassment, not knowing what to say, worry about being judged. For what it's worth, I've heard a lot. Very little surprises me , and I don't have a judgment about it. If calling feels like too much, send an email. You can say as little as "I want to talk to someone about my drinking" and that's enough to get started.

Can I refer someone I love to you? +

Yes. Family members often reach out on behalf of a loved one in active addiction. While I can't begin treatment without the client's direct participation, I'm happy to speak with you about resources, how to approach a difficult conversation with your loved one, and what family counseling might look like.

About Therapy

What to expect from the therapeutic process.

How long is a typical session? +

Sessions are 50 minutes.

How long will I be in therapy? +

This varies significantly from person to person. Some clients benefit from a focused, short-term engagement (12–20 sessions). Others choose to continue for a year or more as they navigate the longer arc of recovery. We'll regularly check in about how you're feeling about your progress and adjust the frequency and duration of our work accordingly. You are always in control of that decision.

Is what I share confidential? +

Yes. Everything you share is protected by therapist-client confidentiality. There are three legal exceptions: if I believe you are at imminent risk of harming yourself or someone else, if there is reasonable suspicion of abuse or neglect of a child or vulnerable adult, or if a court orders disclosure. I will always discuss these limits with you at the start of our work together.

Addiction & Recovery

Specific questions about addiction counseling.

Do I need to be sober to start therapy? +

I work with people across the full spectrum – those struggling with active use, those newly sober and those with years of recovery experience behind them. If you're using when we begin, I request that you are not under the influence during our sessions.

What if I relapse while in therapy? +

If you're having difficulty staying sober all that I ask is that you're honest. I've had clients who relapsed after years of sobriety and came back to session the next week. We talked about what happened. We figured out what the warning signs were. We kept going. Relapse doesn't end the work — it often deepens it.

Do you work with people on medication-assisted treatment (MAT)? +

Yes. Medications like buprenorphine (Suboxone), naltrexone (Vivitrol), and methadone are evidence-based treatments for opioid and alcohol use disorders. I also work with people who have co-occuring disorders that are medicated for disorders other than substance abuse disorder. I am fully supportive of MAT and am happy to coordinate care with your prescribing physician or addiction medicine specialist.
